A recent article in the Guardian showed ‘screen fatigue’ is getting to us all. The sales of ebooks last year slumped by 17% the lowest level since 2011 when Amazon first launched the Kindle.
On the other hand print sales of consumer books rose by nearly 9% and journals in the non-consumer market hit an all time five year high to £3bn.
This of course means the way we consume textual information has once again changed. Screens are now mainly for snippets and communication, and evidently ‘hardcore’ reading is done a lot more now holding a good old piece of paper. This all makes the humble flyer and newsletter as relevant as they ever were.
The humble newsletter has been a staple form of communication for many hundreds of years. Probably a good number fell off a Gutenberg press way back in the 1500’s. Today however newsletter printing is often carried out using home based desktop printers for small runs but for the larger volumes it makes economic sense to get the work done by a local printer.
Newsletters avoid screen fatigue and get the message across.
Newsletters are great for community groups, schools, sports clubs and of course religious organisations. They provide an easy and convenient way of spreading the word, publishing meeting dates and publicising events. Generally keeping people up to speed with group news. Such is the power of a newsletter many have become full blown magazines, selling advertising to subsidise the cost of production and often turn a profit for group.
